Matthew was born in Guildford, UK. He took an MA in Holography from The Royal College of Art and has an established career of over 30 years as an artist with internationally acclaimed exhibitons of Holography and Lenticulars. He lectures on his work in Europe and America, on radio and TV. He is a director of The Olympian Arts Trust and supports Cinema Verite, and the Step by Step foundation.
"It all started about 11, with a Box Browning and a dark room at the back of my parents garage. The first three pictures I took I forgot to roll the film on. When I develped the print for picture 1 it had, perfectly, three very different pictures all in the one picture. I thought I was terribly clever. I suppose I have been trying from then to mix things, make more than just a single print, make images change to make something else, something more interesting, something more alive than a picture." MBA
Matthew was introduced to Holography in 1980 in Melbourne at an exhibition work by Paula Dawson. On returning to the UK he took a course in Holography at Richmond Holographic Studios. He built his own holographic studio in Camberwell, makiing transmission holography and shadowgrams. This work ultimately led to a masters at the Royal College of Art.
Whilst at college Matthew explored Laser Viewable installations, portraiture with the Pulse Laser, and invented his Water Holograms. The Water Holograms are interactive plates which you splash, paint, squirt, and generally let rip with water on.
"As the water hits the suface of the hologram it busts into rich crimson. As the plate dries out the colour starts to go down the spectrum, through orange to gold, to green, dark then light to blue azure and royal colours, then purple and finally it dissapears to nothing. As you play you create layers of pattern and colour with whatever instrument you choose to use with water. The are absorbing private performances and make artists out of everyone." MBA
Still at college he exhibited in the 150 YEARS OF PHOTOGRAPHY show at The Royal Academy in London having a show of large interactive holograms in the Friends Room. Matthew also created the FLAMES light show that adorned the entrance as you arrived at the exhibition. He attended the International Holography Simposium at Lake Forest College, Chicago in 1988 and lectured at the Kust Academy in Koln, German. Matthew graduated winning the 1989 Prudential Award for Holgraphy and a John Downs Trust Award for his Water Holograms.
In the 90's, sponsored by south East Arts, Matthew took The Water Holgrams on tour to museums, galleries, arts centres and schools in the Uk. He has appeared in TV and Radio Arts programs introducing lenticulars and holography to audiences.
In 1995 Matthew set up Interlace 4D Ltd with a number of private investors essentially to create lenticulars for marketing companies, for shop window displays and products for interiors.
Over 10 years as MD and the largest shareholder, Matthew held licenses for both Star Wars and Star Trek creating high quality and rare collectable material. The company designed many other successful lenticular products that were sold direct to the public or through ad agencies, design companies, architects, galleries and the gift market.
